Mobile Device Manage (MDM)
Updated over a week ago

What is mobile device management (MDM)?

A mobile device management (MDM) solution allows IT admins to control and secure a company’s mobile devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc). A few commonly used functionalities of MDM include:

  • Application management (distribute, updates, and monitor apps)

  • Remote configuration (deploy update to devices, remote wipe)

  • Security functionality (patch management, enforce policies, encryption)

  • Monitoring devices (tracking, analytics, troubleshooting, asset management)

What is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)?

Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) is allowing your employees to use their own personal devices for work purposes. BYOD is different from the typical method of implementing MDM on company provided devices.

This approach is implemented by creating a work specific container/profile on ones personal device. The container will segment out the work apps, work data and will be viewable by the company. All while the employee has control of their personal app and data.

Envoy and MDM:

Once devices are enrolled through MDM:

  • Application distribution: Deploy the above applications on managed devices.

  • Policy / Device configuration: Enforce single app/kiosk mode—Bluetooth configuration.

  • Maintenance of app: Deploy updates

  • Security: Remote lock or wipe of devices if stolen

  • Monitoring: Understanding app usage

MDM providers:

Apple and Android do not provide MDM solutions directly instead they’ve developed APIs for third parties to develop MDM solutions. The following link lists some of those providers.

  • Jamf Now (iOS specific)

  • Workspace ONE by VMWare

  • Microsoft Intune (Best support for Microsoft devices)

  • Mosyle (iOS specific) - Free for up to 30 devices

MDM - Envoy Visitors

Device setup

1. Enroll devices into your ABM (Apple Business Manager) portal

Don’t have an Apple Business Manager account?

Common Questions

  • Are our iPads already enrolled in our ABM?

  • What is our Apple Organization ID #

2. Install MDM-managed profile on iPads

  • Only install Envoy Visitors & MDM Application (removes all other apps from the iPad)

  • Enable automatic iOS & app updates

  • Set Home Screen

3. Naming your iPad/s

* Don’t have a list of your Envoy locations? Ask your Envoy CSM and they will be able to provide one.

4. Envoy Visitors

  • Download Envoy Visitors Kiosk from the App Store. Confirm automatic app updates are on for this application.

*Envoy Visitors will need the following settings enabled on the iPad: Bluetooth, access to the Camera

Optimization - We recommend creating a device profile for all of your Envoy iPads.

  • Include only the following applications on the device profile and place them on the home screen: App Store, Settings, Envoy Visitors Kiosk, Safari.

  • Set automatic updates for both iOS & application updates for the Envoy Visitors Kiosk
