What is mobile device management (MDM)?
A mobile device management (MDM) solution allows IT admins to control and secure a company’s mobile devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc). A few commonly used functionalities of MDM include:
Application management (distribute, updates, and monitor apps)
Remote configuration (deploy update to devices, remote wipe)
Security functionality (patch management, enforce policies, encryption)
Monitoring devices (tracking, analytics, troubleshooting, asset management)
What is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)?
Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) is allowing your employees to use their own personal devices for work purposes. BYOD is different from the typical method of implementing MDM on company provided devices.
This approach is implemented by creating a work specific container/profile on ones personal device. The container will segment out the work apps, work data and will be viewable by the company. All while the employee has control of their personal app and data.

Application distribution: Deploy the above applications on managed devices.
Policy / Device configuration: Enforce single app/kiosk mode—Bluetooth configuration.
Maintenance of app: Deploy updates
Security: Remote lock or wipe of devices if stolen
Monitoring: Understanding app usage
MDM providers:
Apple and Android do not provide MDM solutions directly instead they’ve developed APIs for third parties to develop MDM solutions. The following link lists some of those providers.
